Acolytes at St. Thomas
Acolyting at Saint Thomas of Canterbury
Our Acolytes
Canterbury welcomes everyone who is at least 10 years old who would like to serve at our altar. Anyone under 10 wishing to be an acolyte is welcome to meet with Saint Thomas's acolyte mistress, Emily Wirth, and Canon Carole McGowan to request permission to serve. During most of the church year one acolyte serves at the 10:00 a.m. Sunday service. During Epiphany we have two acolytes, and on Feast days and at other celebrations, all acolytes participate. Acolytes who attend other services, such as the noon Wednesday service, can volunteer to assist the celebrant.
Acolytes
He said to them.... "Come and see." (John, 1:39)
Individual training will be arranged for anyone considering becoming an acolyte. Usually new acolytes are paired with experienced acolytes until the new acolyte feels comfortable in serving alone.
The Acolyte Rota is prepared 3 months in advance, with the understanding that other commitments may occur and changes will need to be made. Formal training sessions are held as necessary and announced well in advance. Acolyte robes are furnished.
The goal for Saint Thomas's acolytes is that they have a chance to serve and to learn. The clergy and congregation of Saint Thomas of Canterbury value and honor the service rendered. Please consider becoming an acolyte!
